The Sun and his halo

Hop the menu

During our Sunday's trip we were fascinated by the natural phenomenon called "halo". A halo is a ring of light surrounding the sun or moon and is created when light from the sun or moon is refracted by ice crystals in atmosphere. The ice crystals must have special hexagonal form, which depends on temperature. The halo effect also depends on the ice crystals orientation against the incident light. When the halo occured only by the light reflection from the crystals, it has a white colour. If this was also followed by the refraction in the crystals, we can observe rainbow coloration of halo effect where the red colour is the closest to the Sun. (source: Geophysical institute of SAS)

On the pictures there is a 22 degree halo with lateral Sundogs (mock suns) on the partially visible horizontal ring and an upper circumzenithal arc.

How the halo is created around the Sun ?
